Farewell, Orkut

Olivene

I know that my tag here says that I’m trying to become more interesting by the day, but I’m saying farewell to Orkut today, having received an e-mail informing me that the site will be closed at the end of September (not my first closure of this kind this year!!!), and so I have visited my profile page there, and it seems to me that I’m far LESS interesting than I was circa 2006!  See if you agree…I know that many of my friends there thought that I was pretty cool!

Short profile: I’m a restless soul. I tend to pass this off as being curious about the world but on honest days I just have to face the fact that I have a short attention span… Perhaps this is because I haven’t found what I’m searching for… Perhaps if I were to understand what that was in the first place I would do better in the hunt…

This is why I like to chat with new people… Perhaps you will say something that will spark an idea and lead ultimately to the conflagration of my true potential.

Social

sexual orientation: straight

fashion: casual

smoking: hell no

drinking: no

pets: I love my pet(s)

passions: I am passionate about whatever I happen to be doing at the moment. I particularly enjoy music (ANYTHING except perhaps polka); Art in all its expressions – music, dance and other movement, literature in all its forms, floral artistry, assemblage, architecture, sculpture, painting… You name it, if I find it either interesting or novel or beautiful, I will like it. Debating controversial topics… Not nice to admit that one is opinionated but I try to have an opinion on everything. I think that that is part of remaining engaged with the world around me…

sports: I don’t play sports but I am an active spectator. I have got up off my couch and left my home to watch the following: Cricket, Football (Soccer), Athletics (Track & Field Events), Motorsport, Netball, Basketball, Swimming, Chess (yes I have), Equestrian events, Karate, Field Hockey, Tennis, Badminton. Were I to re-live my life, I’d be a snowboarder or surf (the waves folks, not the Net)…

books: For pleasure I enjoy the challenge of solving the mystery or crime before the protagonist does; otherwise, I have to study… though reading statistics can be pleasurable… especially if you’re understanding it…

music: I said (and mean) anything – I like 60s rock (The Mamas & the Papas/Beach Boys type stuff); Hard rock; reggae (Third World, Bob Marley, Lucky Dube, Apache Indian); dancehall (Sean Paul, Bounty Killer); R&B; Pop (I like Christina Aguilera no matter what anyone else says); World (actually my favourite genre – about 70% of my listening); folk (the Tracy Chapman sound); Country (Wynonna, Faith Hill, you know…); Jazz; Latin; and finally, U2, Elton John, Johann Sebastian Bach, Mozart, Judith Sephuma, Kadja Nin and Steven Curtis Chapman deserve a special mention… I enjoy live music and go to concerts and stage shows often…

tv shows: I admire the often near genius improvisation in “Whose Line Is It Anyway”; I enjoy the healing process and self-discovery evident in the main characters in “Monk” and “House” – their brilliance at their jobs doesn’t hurt either; I’ve long envied the friendships apparent in “Boston Legal”, “Sex and the City” and “Golden Girls”. More recently I have been fascinated by “Bones”, Nip/Tuck” and “In Treatment”…

movies: Anything with an enviable chase scene will grab my attention. In fact, the more implausible the stunt the higher my enjoyment quotient is likely to be; I’m into drama in which people lift themselves (or allow themselves to be lifted) from their limiting circumstances – the type in which some maverick teacher saves a classroom full of students or some mentor inspires a talented but insecure pretender to greatness (yeah, yeah)… I do not mind reading the subtitles on foreign artsy films… I enjoy seeing how non-Western values play out in various situations… Of course this is not true for anything with serious violence – the sort that we see in the news… If I wanted that I would actually watch the news… I do not watch movies that carry a slavery theme or those that depict the suppression of women or the abuse of animals or children… I am angry enough as it is…

cuisines: I do not like yellow fruits so mangoes, papayas and cantaloupe are definitely out… I do enjoy any kind of lentil or nut and so my favourite dishes involve these… I eat my veg without a fuss and in fact when the mood strikes I go vegan – I’ve done it for years at a time and then I fall off the waggon :-) … I have a sweet tooth and I am a chocoholic…
